August 1913. A boat bringing missionaries who call themselves “Jesus’s Matchsticks” lands on the island of Hiiumaa, inciting an explosive, religious awakening. Their followers’ eccentric and unbridled religious rites lead them to be called the Hoppers. At the same time, a Russian army platoon lands on Hiiumaa with a mission to fortify the empire’s Western border.
